"There are always many reasons behind an artist’s work—biographical, social, historical, artistic, literary, and many more. Since I cannot list them all in Jan Fabre's case, I will tell you a few: his personal past, his identity as a Flemish artist, and his love for disciplines seemingly collateral to art, such as writing, theatre, dance, and film. These elements are just some of the reasons that define Fabre as a ‘total artist.’ The fact that he is a Flemish artist is particularly significant, as few nations, like Flanders, can claim an unbroken artistic tradition from the Middle Ages to the present. Of course, engaging with multiple disciplines is no easy feat.
