Smoking Stella in collaboration with the publishing house Parallelo42 Contemporary Art
This project includes the complete collection of essays by the esteemed curator Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, which explore Jan Fabre’s artistic universe.
"There are always many reasons behind an artist’s work—biographical, social, historical, artistic, literary, and many more. Since I cannot list them all in Jan Fabre's case, I will tell you a few: his personal past, his identity as a Flemish artist, and his love for disciplines seemingly collateral to art, such as writing, theatre, dance, and film. These elements are just some of the reasons that define Fabre as a ‘total artist.’ The fact that he is a Flemish artist is particularly significant, as few nations, like Flanders, can claim an unbroken artistic tradition from the Middle Ages to the present. In Fabre’s work, we see this continuity… He is a 'heretical' artist, whose multidisciplinary approach defies the specialization that shaped our culture at the turn of the millennium. Of course, engaging with multiple disciplines is no easy feat. This sort of contemporary Leonardo— as has perhaps already been said—measures himself against these disciplines at an extraordinarily high level. Unlike other artists who experiment across media, such as filmmakers or musicians dabbling in painting or photography, Fabre achieves results that stand apart."— Giacinto Di Pietrantonio
