The exhibition ‘promises of a face’ retraces more than six centuries of portraiture, through paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs from the collections of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, as well as invited works.

The exhibition begins at the birth of the individual in the 15th century and goes on to explore its multiple facets. As a show of power or as introspection, as social recognition or as protest: the portrait is a genre which has known many metamorphoses throughout the ages, up until today’s selfie.

Memling, Rubens, Van Dyck, Gauguin, Ensor, Chagall, Delvaux, Bacon, Tuymans, Borremans, Fabre, Vanfleteren,... Throughout this exhibition, the visitor will rediscover masterworks from the RMFAB in a new context. Old masters will enter into dialogue with contemporary creations and the celebrities of yesterday and today will connect in an original way.
