Is art a trade or a science? Does art have to be beautiful? Are you born an artist, or can art be learned? And is there really such a thing as Antwerp art? These are the big questions addressedby the fashion designer and Academy lecturer Walter Van Beirendonck and Dr Paul Huvenne,Director of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp(Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen, KMSKA) in a spectacular exhibition in the MAS | Museum aan de Stroom.

In this exhibition, veterans like Jacob Jordaens, David Teniers the Younger, Vincent Van Gogh and Laurens Alma Tadema enter into a dialogue with more recent alumni such as Panamarenko, Fred Bervoets, and Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven. A fascinating
reconstruction of the Academy’s 17th-century stateroom takes visitors back to its earliest days. Further on, they can watch today’s Academy students drawing from a live model. The star attraction is a gigantic Golden Wall with the best of 350 years of the Academy.

Highlights from the KMSKA’s collection are complemented by major works on loan from Belgian and international collections and (their own) works lent by a number of renowned artists. Brace yourself for an idiosyncratic journey through four centuries of
living history.
